A frugal Christmas meal
From The Age:
Cheap and delicious. What more could you ask for?
Are hard times threatening your Christmas dinner? Well then, Peru has the answer: guinea pig.
Officials in the coastal Peruvian province of Callao on Monday hailed the Andean rodent as a low-cost, low-fat alternative to a traditional turkey or roast pork Christmas dinner.
Guinea pigs can feed seven or eight for about $3.20, Callao official Mario Sanguinity told Associated Press Television.
"The idea is to give the people a tasty, economical option," he said.
The presentation included a live guinea pig dressed as Santa Claus and eight of its comrades laid out fried, broiled and roasted in traditional dishes from different regions of Peru.
Cheap and delicious. What more could you ask for?

Hey Whitey - an idea.....
You could always get the kids a pet (or 2) for christmas - guinea pigs make good pets - and then when the nippers get bored (as they inevitably do), or even just hungry - voila, dinner is already supplied!! If the kids have a low boredom threshold, you could even let them keep two of the rodents as breeding stock, and just divert the youngsters to the dinner table! (as for me, I think I'd rather explore some of Rita's suggestions for $10 meals, but there is no accounting for taste!)
Have a happy and frugal Christmas, and watch out for Marley's ghost.

They actually taste pretty damn good. Usually deep fried whole, a bit like a South American dagwood dog, but without the batter. I'd go that for Xmas.....so ver the turkey thing
Maybe I can get some turkey flavouring to marinate the guinea pigs.
I tried guinea pig. Cheap? Yes. (But at what cost to your conscience??) Delicious? Well.
Hey Whitey
Having removed tongue from cheek, thanks for all the laughs for 2008. I hope Santa brings you something other than socks from Les Lees (although they are of course the very epitomy of sartorial elegance, and SUCH good value). (oops, tongue has resumed its normal position!)
yours in frugality
The Pres
and Merry Christmas to you.
